This is the first chapter of the WordPress Theme Guide series. In this chapter, you will learn how to install WordPress on a local computer. An essential for any aspiring theme developer is a local install of WordPress. There are plenty of benefits to doing so and there are also pitfalls if you don’t. I will tell you about the pitfalls in a second, but before that, I want to tell you 5 great reasons why you should use a local install as your sandbox as opposed to installing a live version on some subdomain of yours:

  1. Works exactly like the real deal; plugins and all

  2. No need to mess with FTP programs

  3. Develop anywhere (no connection needed)

  4. Make sure your theme is compatible with latest version of WordPress

  5. Code in secret, then release with a bang

WordPress was originally created as a weblog or blog platform. But now WordPress become so powerful that you can use it for any type of website and use it as a Content Management System (CMS). In this and next articles, I’m going to share some of my WordPress themes I’ve created before. I’m not a programmer, but this themes are pretty good. Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that WordPress has made it so easy that even a non-programmer can build a wonderful website.

Multi Column List with jQuery

So I needed a method to take a long, nested list and turning it into a compact, multiple acolumn list, for example, in order to display it as sort of a site map.

Being a huge fan of jQuery, it was naturally my go-to library of choice.

Scanning the plugins site, I can’t find a fair solution.

One of the caveats of many methodologies is that each list item has to be the same height. This works Ok for a lot of use cases, but what if your the source for the list contain arbitrary text you don’t control.
