Gallery shows thumbnails only

When I click on the link to the gallery (photobox), I get a white page with the thumbnails. To start the slideshow, I have to click on one of the images. Is there a way to set a starter image and have the slide show start from that? Preferably in a new tab.
Also I can set only a link to the gallery either in the page or in a menu. When I add [gmedia id=4] to the page nothing is displayed.

If shortcode not working on page then there is some JS error or conflict with other plugin. Post link to the gallery page, so I can give more info.
